Restaurant Review on Mr. Tong's

Mr. Tong’s Mandarin Szechuan Restaurant

97-20 Queens Boulevard
Rego Park, NY 11374
(718) 897-8202

Mr. Tong’s Mandarin Szechuan Restaurant serves the best Chinese cuisine in Queens. It is a small, cozy restaurant with dim lights, expansive mirrors, and Chinese paintings of flowers and bamboo decorating the walls. Decorative lanterns and plants are hung near the entrance, along with plants, and low background music also help to set the mood. Their menu offers many courses, including cold appetizers, soup, fried rice, lo mein, seafood, meat, chicken, chef’s specialties, vegetables, casseroles, noodles, desserts, and combination meals.
A usual meal for me at Mr. Tong’s includes braised sea cucumber and edamame with bean curd skin and preserved vegetables. The edamame is delicious and has an enchanting flavor with some salt, bean curd skin, and preserved vegetables to make it even more special. The braised sea cucumber is slippery, and shiny on the inside when you cut into it. The sauce that comes with it is extremely tasty, and it makes my mouth water just smelling it. This trip to Mr. Tong’s was no different. I ordered my usual favorites and included family tofu as well. The family tofu has a sweet n’ sour taste, along with a little spiciness. It is soft and easy to chew. Eating it along with some white rice is an absolute taste of heaven.
Unfortunately, the service is mediocre. While it didn’t take a long time for the food to reach the table, the servers weren’t overly cheerful either. The total cost for a family of four is about $75 including sales tax and gratuity. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone that likes Asian cuisine because it offers a wide variety of courses depending on what different kinds of people like. I award this restaurant four stars.
